Pioneer PDRW839 CD Recorder Specifications
The Pioneer PDRW839 offers both a three-disc changer and a CD recording drive that enables you to quickly record any song that’s currently playing. Just press the Record This button and the PDRW839 recues the song and records it to a CD-R in the recording drive.
The PDRW839 is compatible with both CD-R and CD-RW discs and it records at 2x speed. If you have a CD, MD, DAT, or DCC player connected to either of the digital inputs of this recorder, you can easily make digital recordings using the digital synchro recording mode. If you have a turntable, cassette deck, or any other analog audio source connected to the analog inputs of this recorder, you can easily make analog recordings using the analog synchro mode. The Smart Copy feature automatically switches from digital to analog recording if you are making a copy of a digital copy.
You can name a CD-R or CD-RW so that when you load the disc into the player the disc name, track title, or artist name will appear. Each title can be up to 120 characters long. The CD recorder can store information for up to three discs at one time.
The front panel of the PDRW839 has a standard headphone jack (with variable volume control) and a PS/2 input for use with an optional computer keyboard. The PDRW839 offers the following connections on the back: optical digital input/output, coaxial digital output, and composite A/V (RCA) input/output.
What’s in the Box
PDRW839 CD recorder, wireless remote control (PWW1171), 2 AA batteries, AC power cord, two RCA stereo cords, and printed operating instructions.
Pioneer PDRW839 CD Recorder Overviews
Record from one to three CDs onto your own personalized CD with this PDR-W839 CD-recorder. Select the tracks you want to record and press the Copy Start button. The easiest CD-recorder in history is presented here thanks to the “Rec This” button: automatically record the track you are listening to by one touch of a button. The easiest way of making digital recordings! This versatile recording/mixing console is a stand-alone machine that makes digital mixing simpler than ever. The PDR-W839 is built to mix down and record three CDs onto one recordable disc. The two-drawer item makes the ‘best of’ collection conveniently and easily. After the recording has been finalized, it can be played on almost any CD player, anywhere. You can listen to it on the car audio system or a headphone CD player, as well as at home. Music lovers need never be without their favorite melodies again. In an industry first, the PDR-W839 comes with a 3-CD changer and a single CD-R/RW recorder. This unique combination of digital formats creates exceptional ease of use for the consumer. The one touch copy feature makes the process staggeringly simple. All tracks of a disc in the primary tray of the 3-CD changer are dubbed to a CD-R/RW disc at double speed, after which the disc is finalized automatically. By operating Disc Copy, users can copy all the tracks in one of three discs in the CD changer to a CD-R/RW disc. The Track Copy mode dubs just one track on one of the three CDs to a CD-R/RW disc. Program Copy allows dubbing of only programmed tracks – up to 30 of them – in three CDs to a CD-R/RW disc. When copying discs, tracks and programmed tracks, the PDR-W839 uses the normal or double speed without degrading sound quality.
[if I've owned one of these for a few months and recorded over 100 CD's on it. Things I like most about it are: quality of recorded audio, general ease of use, synchro recording features, CD-Text facility with keyboard input and sample rate conversion for recording from other digital sources like DAT. The user manual is very well written and easy to understand.
There are some minor annoyances which may not matter to you: the keyboard input (on mine and 2 other machines I've tried, with a variety of keyboards) is patchy (misses keystrokes, gets stuck on upper case, etc) and the machine will not copy CD-Text from one disc to another (a really basic omission).
The changer mechanism can be a bit awkward to use (disc 3 sits deeep in the tray and is fiddly to get out), and it's rather slow to change discs - these are not faults, just things to be aware of.
Overall, I'm happy with the Pioneer, especially when compared to other machines I looked at, but it wouldn't have taken much extra effort for Pioneer to produce a machine that was "excellent" and not just "very good".]

A trooper – S. Smith – Sanford, ME United States
I started with a couple Philips burner decks and they were horrible, but that’s another story. I demanded my money back from the Philips purchase and opted for the 839. I record all the time and this thing just keeps ticking. It even fixed some burns that the Philips screwed up! I got the extended warranty, which I would recommend on any device like this. So far the things that have gone wrong have been relatively minor: 1) sometimes when I’m finalizing a disc and it gets to 00:00, the disc just keeps spinning. I need to shut the unit off and turn it back on, but the burn is fine. 2) sometimes the remote will just stop responding, which is necessary for functions such as programming! Both these problems are intermittent and I’ve sent the unit out for repair, but of course they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. I eventually got a new remote, which fixed that issue.
UPDATE: well, it’s December 2007 and I’m still burning like crazy…she just keeps on ticking!
