Sony D-NF400 Psyc ATRAC Portable CD Player with Digital Tuner (AM / FM / TV / Weather) Specifications

Spin your commercial CDs, your homemade music CDs of almost any stripe, or listen to the radio, TV, or weather-band transmissions with Sony’s versatile, full-circle D-NF400 Psyc-styled Walkman portable CD player. The snazzy player includes SonicStage software, which lets you take full advantage of ATRAC3plus (Sony’s proprietary music-compression technology) when making custom MP3 CDs on your computer. Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and–thanks to Sony’s great work in DSP efficiency–more than 85 hours of ATRAC3plus CD or up to 50 hours of audio CD playback from 2 AA batteries (not included).

The D-NF400 Psyc offers a 2-line dot-matrix display, full ID3 tag recognition, and bookmark playback (which lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button). CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track’s original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you’ll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps).

Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, SonicStage CD Simple Burner software transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from your PC’s hard drive and burns them to recordable CDs using ATRAC3plus compression.

The D-NF400 Psyc offers a whopping 51 station presets, which works out to 30 FM, 10 AM, 4 WB, and 7 TV stations so you’re never far from your favorite channels. You can hook the player up with your home system through an optional analog stereo “Y” interconnect.

Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup’s shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-NF400’s heat-resistant lid helps protect the player against high-temperature build up, especially when you’re using it outdoors or in a vehicle.

Digital Mega Bass Sound boosts your music’s low end without high clarity and low distortion, and there’s also a built-in equalizer with 3 preset curves and 1 customizable setting. Sony’s automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries–and guards your hearing–by capping your listening level at either of two settings. The player works with an optional AC/DC 4.5V power adapter (AC-E45HG or -E45A).

Customer Review

I got this cd player about 5 months ago and have had no problems, it has worked perfect, very good sound and its SONY so you can except a good cd player for your money, it loads up the cd really fast and resumes from where you left off, the radio works perfect, the tv you could get some channels and the weather I could only get one channel, but overall it has great sound, worth every dollar!!

Still ticking after 2+ years – Fiji Mermaid – Woodside, NY United States
Just wanted to say, even though I know probably no one buys portable CD players anymore, this one is a great deal. It doesn’t skip, it plays MP3 CDs, and after taking a beating for over 2 years my player still works great. Sony really does make the best Discmans.

Great Player – J. Ader – St. Louis
This is a great player for CDs. The radio and TV reception are quite good, too. Even jiggling the player doesn’t cause skipping of CDs. The only thing I would improve would be the size of the menu and button descriptions. They are very hard to read, especially on the silver-colored case. We now own 2 of these because we liked the first one so well.

Nice, but not *that* great for audiobooks – Al – ARVADA, CO USA
I use this gadget for either MP3 audiobooks or FM radio. So here’s the feedback based on that. I find the player quite usable but definitely far from the best for the audiobooks.

PROS:

1. It has resume feature – your CD will restart on the same track at the same exact offset (at the same exact spot of the track) where you stopped the player the last time. I guess this is probably the most important feature.
2. It has Fast Forward / ReWind within a track functionality, which is pretty important as well (if you get distracted and need to go back a few seconds, but not an entire track)
3. It can play folders/subfolders just fine.
4. It can play low bitrate MP3s – the lowest I’ve tried so far is 32KB/s 22MHz
5. The radio works fine
6. The controls (at least the basic ones) are fairly intuitive – I can use them with one hand without looking.
7. MP3 tag display on the LCD – pretty decent.
8. (Hopefully) Sony quality – I love Sony electronics, it’s normally reliable and long lasting. Most other brands don’t come anywhere close. Time will show if this will hold up.

CONS:
1. You will loose your spot once the batteries die. The design is pretty weird – the battery compartment lid is UNDER the CD, not on the bottom of the player. So to replace the batteries you have to remove the CD. Once you remote the CD – you lost your spot. (No resume functionality after the CD is removed as in Rio or iRiver models). You may be able to partially circumvent this if you have an AC adapter (doesn’t come with it in the US, but you can probably use a universal one), and you use the Bookmark feature of the player (I haven’t tried that one yet). You would have to have your player plugged in into AC adapter, and have a bookmark set on your track while replacing the batteries. Anyway – once your batteries die, you have to get back to your original spot.
2. No quick +10/-10 track functionality (would be useful when you need to get back to your track after replacing the batteries – see # 1 above)
3. No remote control. That would be very nice to have.
4. The LED screen is not lit-up. At night you can’t see what’ going on.

I guess I wouldn’t say I regrest buying the player, but it is definitely far from either Rio SP-100 or iRiver iMP-150 I used to have. If only iRiver started making reasonably priced models again, I would definitely buy another one of those – even though they tend not to last much over a year.
